What is Teleradiology?
Teleradiology is the use of data transmission networks to transfer radiology images from one site to another remote site for the purposes of interpretation or for a second opinion.
Why do we need it ?
There are compelling reasons for the use of Teleradiology including :
- Geographic isolation- some remote sites do not have a population sufficient to sustain a full time specialist radiologist onsite.
- Manpower issues- Teleradiology can be used to cover sites in case of unexpected absences
- Efficiency of workflow- Teleradiology can make a radiologist more efficient when subspecialty cases can be transmitted to specialists with subspecialty interests/skills
